Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You start ruminating about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, ravaging entire towns in its wake. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the roar that followed was deafening. Thousands were trapped beneath wreckage, their fate unknown. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to face a future forever scarred.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, fighting against time and hazardous conditions to locate those still alive. The world watched in horror as the full magnitude of the disaster revealed itself, offering prayers to the stricken population.
Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case check here of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was getting ready out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for work.
I arrived. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
